We do things differently from the other stores.  The first thing that you may notice when entering our store is that we don't stock very many bikes.  There's a number of reasons why, but mainly because we are mostly a service-oriented shop.  Most shops have a huge showroom and a tiny workshop.  We prefer a larger workshop.  Also, when you look at the number of brands we sell, it would be impossible to stock all the resulting models (482) in all of there colors and sizes. So, we prefer personalizing your new bike to YOU, rather than steering you toward a bike that we happen to have in stock.

The BEST Assembly! Ever! 

At JRABS, our bicycle assembly process is the most comprehensive in the industry.  I can guarantee you that the the bicycle that you purchase from me will last longer, ride smoother, be more efficient, and cost you less in the long run.  Here's why:

"Grease failure could come at any time. Factory original greases are often of the lowest quality and applied in very limited or erratic quantities. Frames are often inadequately cleaned at the factory, so bottom bracket and headset grease often has been contaminated with abrasive particles even before the bike has been ridden. For these reasons it is difficult to project the normal calendar time or elapsed miles that should occur between bearing overhauls. As a rule of thumb, 2,000-3,000 miles or two to three years of generally fair-weather riding should make a bike ready for an overhaul. The best method to determine whether grease has become due for replacement is inspection." John Barnett, Barnett's Manual DX - This is why, JRABS overhuals EACH bicycle before you ever ride it.  We replace the factory grease with genuine Phil Wood grease.

Bikes are shipped to bike shops in the same manner, no matter the brand.  What the bike shop does from there will make a huge difference in the bike's performance and longevity.  Here are the approximate times to assemble a new adult bicycle:

We completely disassemble your new bike, check the frame alignment, spoke tension, overhaul the hubs & headset, remove the cranks and bottom bracket to make sure the frame is properly prepped, and then re-assemble it.  Here are some images of our assembly process for a $500 mountain bike.

Frame Design Starting with a wide and consistent stack and reach range, we set out to design a frame that could handle on or off road conditions while maintaining a comfortable ride. As you start to review the geo chart you will noticed we have 3 different fork offsets, BB drops and rear center measurements. Add size-specific tubing and 2 different sized rear triangles on our carbon models and you have what we feel is the perfect adventure geo for all sized riders. The reason for this is that we wanted the 44 and 61 to fit the rider correctly and make the geo changes needed to provide the perfect ride. Size Specific Frame Design Size Specific Design (SSD) is the Jamis design philosophy and technique used to create the best possible riding bike for each size rider. Rather than limiting frame size variations to just different length top, seat and head tubes lengths, we take an all-inclusive look at each frame’s total configuration. Every SSD frame will also feature size-specific BB drop, rear center, fork offset/trail and SST technology. 142 x 12MM Thru-Axle Securing the rear wheel to the frame by threading it into the rear dropouts is not only safer, it’s stiffer. Increasing the rear axle diameter from 10mm to 12mm provides a stable platform for the disc braking forces and allows us to tune the rear seat stays for more compliance/comfort. You will appreciate this on your long days. The rear wheel tracks directly in line with the frame, for more precise handling, so you can go faster with more confidence. The Surly Cross Check is designed to supply a comfortable but lively ride. The tubing is CroMoly steel, high quality drawn tubing built to Surly's demanding specifications. It’s built to work with components of popular sizes, meaning you can find options in tons of new and old parts. It will accommodate a wide range of crank types and chainring sizes. It’s got accommodations for racks and fenders front and rear. Because it takes those big tires, so you can outfit it to suit where and how you’ll use it. It’s a cyclocross bike by design but that’s not how most people use it. It does as good a job getting you across the country as it does getting you across town. This bike comes from Surly built with a Shimano drivetrain, and traditional bar-end Shifters. Tektro linear-pull brakes provide ample stopping power, so you can cruise without fear!

Surly's Long Haul Trucker enjoys a reputation as one of the best riding and most value-packed touring bikes out there. It's been around long enough to be tested in the real world, in all kinds of places, with all kinds of loads on all kinds of roads. Sometimes, however, a combination of load, climate and terrain demands a bit more braking performance than a standard rim-brake LHT can provide. That's where the Disc Trucker comes in. Disc Trucker is a Long Haul Trucker specifically designed for the unique forces discs impose. Surly made sure it can run discs, racks, and fenders with no jury rigging, a somewhat unique feature they've just now decided to call Simulpatibility. Most of the components on the complete bike are the same as the standard LHT; parts chosen for their balance of technical capability, durability, and value. The drivetrain uses the sort of wide gearing you will need for loaded and unloaded travel, cable operated disc brakes for their proven reliability and ease of service, and hubs that are durable and easy to maintain. You'll need to outfit it with the extras you want, like fenders and racks. Surly doesn't include that stuff because everybody's needs are different. From the casual commuter to the person who rides around the world more than once, the Disc Trucker is more than capable. It's a tool designed from the ground up to take you and a bunch of stuff just about anywhere you'd like to go. It is a tool to help you get lost and find yourself.
